Singling Out Spencer

I have to start by saying I LOVE BIRTHDAYS.  I love them for the normal reasons-  It's fun to celebrate and eat cake and all that.  The main reasons I love birthdays are because I get to focus on one kid and not feel bad at all about it.  I get to spend the time leading up to the birthday thinking what they would love, reminiscing about them, and I get to celebrate them.

I love the birthday traditions we have started.  Some of our traditions are-
The birthday child gets to pick the meals
Tyler and I make a cake for them and it's always a surprise
Every Four years is a "party" year (4, 8, 12, 16)
The birthday kid gets to pick out one toy from the store

This year is Spencer's 4th birthday.  It's a party year for him. Luckily we have family around because otherwise we might not have anyone to invite.  Enough about the will see how it all goes down when we celebrate on the 4th (we are celebrating a day early because it works better for everyone).

What I really want to do is sit down and write some of the things that make Spencer so awesome!  He really is a one of a kind kid.  I don't know if words or pictures will do him justice but here goes....

Spencer is turning four but has seemed four for a while now.  I am not sure why.  I guess because he does everything with Garret and doesn't seem almost two years behind him.  Spencer is really bright.  He can read little words, he analyzes things, he is a deep thinker and he just seems to take it all in.

He has been anticipating his birthday for a while now.  When we go to the store we sometimes talk about what he might pick for his birthday.  Since they don't get to just buy things when they want from the store.  The birthday trip to the store is a real treat and is anticipated for months in advance.  Recently Spencer decided he wants a measuring tape for his birthday.  When I asked him why he said "because then I could measure and see how big I am getting".  I am sure he would pick a measuring tape out...if Titus had not gotten him one (don't tell).  So now I don't know what he will pick, but I am excited to see.  When I ask him what he thinks his cake might be he says either "milk, flip flops or love bugs" because those are some of his favorite things.  I have had fun teasing him lately saying "we are either going to have a packing party or a birthday party".  He is cute because he always very seriously says "I would rather have a birthday party".
This last year with Spencer has been great. He has been a very easy 3 year old.  He has moments of course but overall he is just an easy going happy little guy.  Except when he first gets up.  He has gotten better but lots of times he wakes up grumpy then slowly turns back into his usual self.  He is a smiler and has the best big brown eyes.  I really never get tired of looking and his sweet little face.
Some of the things he loves right now are Lego's, his brothers and sister, snuggling, reading, drawing, wrestling his Dad, puzzles, his love bug shirt, primary, his cousins, singing, dancing, and play dough.  I have decided that four year olds are the cutest to watch with babies.  I love watching Spencer with Titus.  He is just so fascinated by Titus and can't get enough of him.
Spencer has a sweet little heart and loves picking flowers for me, drawing pictures to give as gifts, giving hugs when people are sad, his feeling get hurt sometimes and you can just see his little heart hurting.  He tends to brush most things off pretty well.

He is at a great age for saying funny and memorable things. He keeps us laughing with his insights and smiling with his sentiments.  He keeps us guessing and challenges us with his questions. You never know what you are going to get when he starts talking.  He used to be so quite but now he is full of questions.  He wants to know everything.  He really wants to know too.  Watching movies with him is kind of torture though!  He asks questions the entire time.  I like sticking to movies we have seen because then he already knows the answers.  New movies + Spencer = Non-stop questions!!!
Some of my favorite things from Spencer's third year of life include (but are not limited too)-

The snuggles he gives me when he wakes up from his nap.  I almost always get a good hug and a few minutes of him curled on my lap when he wakes up.  I look forward to it everyday.

Watching him learn.  Letters and writing are really clicking and he gets closer to reading everyday.

Watching him gain more confidence in primary and the big group. He was so adorable the week he was the "special" person and he still wears his crown.

Picking fruit with him and the rest of the family.  Working together to freeze and can it and enjoying it together.  Without fail when we pull something out that they helped with I get to hear them say "I helped pick that".

Going to story time and on countless walks together.  We talk the whole way and it's just so fun.  There are no distractions and we just talk.  We talk about tree houses, books, superheros, where we are going to live, jokes and a million other things.

Spencer talking to Titus in my tummy.  He knew all along he was a boy.  I think they formed a relationship long before he ever entered this world!

Listening to him and Garret talk to each other.  They have their own little conversations and they are just so fun.

Playing in the backyard together.  Watching him slowly learn to go higher in the tree, jump higher on the trampoline and finally slide down the slip n slide!

Listening to him sing at church and around the house.

His dance moves.  He has a certain face he makes when he is dancing and it is so classic and is just a Spencer look.

The funny way he talks out of the corner of his mouth when he is being silly.

Watching him try to be like his Dad.  Listening to the things he wants to be and realizing the top of the list is always being a "Dad".

Sharing holidays with him.

Listening to the lessons he gives on family night.  He has a pure and simple testimony of the gospel.  Its beautiful.

Spencer is a joy.  He is a special kid that makes our worlds so much more complete.  I can't imagine life without this little darling.  I loved him when he was born and have loved each and every day of his life.  I wish I could freeze him how he is.  I would never get sick of him at this age.  I really and truly could have him for a sidekick forever.  At the same time I am enjoying watching him grow so much and can't wait to see who he becomes!  He has great hopes and dreams for the future and I hope they all come true for him.
I hope that his birthday is a day he will always remember.  I hope that we can convey to him how deeply he is loved.  I hope he feels like the king of the day.

Spencer we LOVE you so much!  Happy Birthday (in a couple days)!

Dress-ups and outties

Anna's kids were over the other day.  They decided to put on plays.  All the kids took turns coming up with ideas.  They did some silly made up plays then tried to act out beauty and the beast. Adele was Kyle's sidekick in one of the plays.  I thought they made a pretty cute team!

Titus finally took a dip in the real bathtub.  He really enjoyed it!  I thought he looked so cute in the tub.  His little outtie is going to be his trademark I think.  The kids love it- they think it makes him special.

There is just something about a fresh clean baby!!!

Kiddo Pictures

Adele looking cute before running out into the sprinkler.

She thinks she is so funny- climbing into bed with the boys.  She loves to crawl in and say "night night".
Garret still loving his little brother!
Titus is growing WAY to fast.  He went to the doctor today and weighed 10 pounds 3 ounces and was 23 inches long.  The doctor said his growth was astounding!
He is pretty mellow- most of the time!
We enjoyed a hot dog and smores night with Anna and family.

Titus is getting stronger all the time.  He is always moving his head around now looking at whats around him.
I love the funny faces babies make.  Titus makes great faces, especially when he is sleeping.  He is always doing crazy eyes in his sleep, smiling and lots of funny twitching going on.
Katie and Nicole had a birthday party.  It was lots of fun.  The kids had a great time- there was a pinata, cake and games!

Saturday we had a garage sale and sold our couches (one was so dead the other was so uncomfortable).  Titus and I took a nap on the floor together.  He slept longer then me and looked so cute all curled up on the floor.
Tyler and I have started getting ready for Spencer's birthday.  We made this pull string pinata the other night- can you guess the theme?  We have lots more to do to get ready but it's in the works---but ssshhhh he doesn't know the theme yet- its a surprise!!!

Today I took Titus in to have some routine new born blood work done.  It was an interesting experience.  I had all four kids with me.  Which actually was no big deal, the older three were on their best behavior.  The people at the hospital were rather rude about me bringing them along but since I was just getting blood work they let us stay.

Anyway when we finally got to the lab to get blood work done the lab guy was really nice which was a relief after the other people we dealt with getting in.  But he kept saying "Thus".  He said "Hi little Thus" and "Thus has big feet" (he gets a lot of comments on his big feet).  I kept just looking at him weird trying to figure out what he was talking about.  Finally he asked me if it was Swedish.  I told him his name was Titus and he said "oh sorry it looks like Thus on the paper".  He told me likes Titus a lot better than Thus.  We get some weird reactions to Titus I can't imagine what I would get if I introduced him as "Thus".

Titus is two weeks old today.  It blows my mind how fast time is going by.  His newborness is starting to fade, he lost his umbilical cord yesterday (still has a MAJOR outtie) and he stays awake for longer stretches of time.  I want him to stay little but since he won't we are trying to enjoy it while it last.

In other news I am trying not to get to stressed out about the fact that Tyler's residency ends next week and we still haven't made definent plans for the future.  We know what we want to do but no papers are signed yet.  Tyler's residency has been a good experience for him.  It has gone by so fast.  It's hard to believe we have been here a year.  I feel like I just unpacked and now I am trying to pack again!

Adele is doing awesome with potty training.  In fact I think it is safe to say she is trained and has been for a while now.  She has had a couple interesting accidents though.

#1  I find her in the bathroom with her pants and undies down standing next to the toilet (trying to pee like the boys).  She just looked at me with a shocked look on her face.

#2  The kids were playing outside in the sprinklers and were all wet.  The boys said they needed to go so I told them to go to a place in the yard where no one could see them and just go (I figured it would save me from having to clean up water all through the house).  What do you know Adele decided to give it a try too.  Once again she was shocked that it didn't go where she wanted!

Adele seems to be adjusting to life with the new baby pretty well.  She mellows out a little more each day.  I think moving will throw her off again but for now she seems more like her spunky self. She is at a mischievous but fun stage.  Her vocabulary is pretty amazing.  She can say most anything and talks in sentences more and more all the time.  She has some funny words that I just can't bring myself to correct her on because i think it is so cute.  She calls her flip flops - "pee- pops" and Titus "buddy Ty".  She loves Anna and Marc's trampoline and asks about it all the time.  She checks out the window for her cousins and announces who is outside to all of us. We love our little Deli- girl even if she does have a funny accident from time to time!

The Collection

I am not really a collection type of person.  I have never been one to want shelves of random things around- but I do have one collection I love.  I love this collection because it has lots of meaning (no random pieces in it).  Tyler gave me the first one when we were dating, the next when we got married and the others were give after each of our kids were born.

Tyler picked this one out for Titus.  I think it is the perfect piece to add to and possibly complete my collection .  It's fun because the kids love to ask which one is for them and they like to look at them.  I told them someday I would give them the one that represents them.  They think that is a pretty exciting thing to look forward to!

Father's Day and More

Tyler is the Father of FOUR now!  He is the best Dad ever.  I could write on and on about how wonderful he is.  I'll just sum it up by saying not every Dad knows how to laugh when he is peed on!

The kids had fun making breakfast for Tyler.  They also made some pictures for him and decorated a tie.
Titus was so excited to celebrate, he even stayed awake for a little while today (look at those eyes- the yellow is finally going away).
At church the boys sang with the primary kids.  It gets me every time and they weren't even singing to me they were singing to the Dads.  They are just so cute!

The kids ran around in the sun this afternoon.  It was so nice out they just had to get wet.

For dinner we all made our own calzones.  Adele hardly touched hers.  Probably because she filled up on olives and pepperoni before.

They turned out pretty huge.  I think we will be able to get a couple of meals out of them.

Life with four is going really well.  We love it- we feel so blessed to have these four little kiddos in our lives.

At Home...

We brought our little Titus home on Monday morning.  He looked like this...(Tyler came up with the bandage splint- works wonders!- He has a funny belly button- I'm thinking it is going to be an outtie)
He had to go back in to have his bilirubin checked Tuesday and today.  Luckily it has finally started going down so we didn't have to take him to the hospital for the lights (this is especially good because Tyler is going to be gone for a dental conference the next couple days).  The doctor says his liver has started working and the jaundice is loosing the battle now!

Tuesday I decided to change Titus on the couch. The kids were gathered around watching.  I took his diaper off and lifted his legs to wipe him off and our little man squirted poop ALL over me. The kids laughed so hard.  Now they gather around every time I change him in hopes that he will get me again.

He got his first sponge bath after the incident.  Once again he had three fans watching.

We took an evening stroll to Blanche's house so she could meet our new little one.  She loved seeing him of course.
And Titus settled in and enjoyed his ride in the carrier.  I have gotten so much use out of this carrier!

Most of the time Titus just sleeps though (usually with someone holding him!)
A few people have asked if I wish Titus had been a girl- Nope. There is a part of me that will always wish Adele had a sister (I have three sisters and can't imagine life without them, they are the greatest, so it seems weird to not have more than one girl).  I don't want a sister for Adele though if it means trading in my boys.  I feel like I knew him long before I ever saw him and he is the perfect addition to our family.  I couldn't be happier with the way our family has come together.
